Screen printing is awesome—but it’s not always the best fit for every project. If you’re working with a small quantity, a super detailed design, or lots of color, there’s another option that might be just what you need: DTF printing, also known as Direct-to-Film.
At Press Room, we use both traditional and modern printing methods depending on what’s best for the job. Our goal isn’t to push one technique—it’s to help you get the right results for your artwork, your garment, and your budget. Because at the end of the day, you deserve good press.
What Is DTF (Direct-to-Film) Printing?
DTF printing is a newer technology that lets us print your design onto a special film, then transfer it directly onto a garment using heat and pressure. It works on a wide range of fabrics and is especially great for full-color or highly detailed designs.
Instead of creating screens (like in traditional screen printing), DTF uses digital printing to get ultra-precise results with no color limits. That means you can bring bold, vibrant, multi-color designs to life—even if you’re just ordering a few pieces.
When to Use DTF Instead of Screen Printing
While screen printing is a go-to for bulk orders and classic looks, DTF really shines in a few key situations. Here’s when DTF might be the better choice for your project:
1. Small Quantities
Screen printing involves setup time and materials that make it less cost-effective for short runs. If you only need a few shirts—or even just one—DTF is a great alternative. No setup, no screens, no problem.
2. Full-Color or Complex Designs
DTF allows for vibrant, full-color prints without extra costs for each color. If your design includes gradients, shadows, textures, or photo-realistic elements, DTF handles that beautifully. No color limits, just clean, high-res detail.
3. Detailed Artwork
Tiny text? Intricate logos? Fine lines? No problem. DTF prints with high precision, capturing the small stuff that might not hold up well in a screen print.
4. Specialty Fabrics
Unlike screen printing, which works best on cotton or blends, DTF is super versatile. It works great on nylon, polyester, spandex, and even tricky items like windbreakers or bags.
Pros & Cons of DTF Printing
Like any printing method, DTF has its strengths—and a few limitations. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you decide if it’s the right fit for your project:
✅ Pros
- No Minimums
Perfect for small runs, one-offs, or samples. - Full Color with No Extra Fees
Print as many colors as you want—DTF doesn’t charge by the color. - Incredible Detail
Great for small text, gradients, and photo-realistic images. - Versatile on Fabrics
Works well on cotton, blends, polyester, nylon, and more. - Flexible Application Options
We can apply the transfers for you—or ship them to you ready-to-press.
⚠️ Cons
- Different Feel Than Screen Print
DTF sits on top of the fabric, so it has a slightly different hand feel—more like a vinyl transfer than ink soaked into the garment. - Not Ideal for High-Volume Orders
While DTF is great for short runs, screen printing is often more cost-effective for bulk orders over 50 or 100 pieces.
DTF Pricing at Press Room
DTF pricing works a little differently from screen printing. Instead of charging by color and setup, we base our pricing on two main factors: the size of your design and the number of transfers you order.
Whether you need 1 or 100, we can print high-quality transfers that are vibrant, durable, and press-ready. You’ve got options:
- We can apply them for you
Send us your blanks (or we’ll help you choose them), and we’ll take care of the printing and pressing. - Or we can ship transfers to you
Already have a heat press? We’ll send you high-quality, ready-to-use transfers you can apply on your own schedule.
This gives you flexibility—whether you’re running a brand, doing fulfillment, or just want to test a design before committing to a larger run.
How to Get the Best Results with DTF
DTF is super versatile, but a few simple steps can make a big difference in the final outcome. Here’s how to get the most out of your DTF prints:
Use High-Quality Artwork
Clean artwork = clean results. For best quality, send us vector files (.ai, .eps, .svg) or raster files at 300dpi at actual print size (.png, .psd, .tif, etc.). If you’re not sure your file is print-ready, we’re happy to take a look.
Mind the Size
DTF transfers are priced based on design size, so scaling down when possible can help reduce cost—especially if you’re ordering in bulk or placing multiple designs on one sheet (we can help gang them up!).
Wondering if Screen Printing Might Be a Better Fit?
DTF is great for certain types of projects—but if you’re planning a large order or want that classic soft-hand print feel, screen printing could be the way to go.

Don’t Worry if You’re Not Sure
You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. If you’ve got an idea, send it over—we’ll make sure your artwork and garments are a good fit for DTF (or recommend a better option if needed).
